What Can Fix Marvel Comics?

Saw an article that involved some ex-Marvel Comic staffers basically complaining about the comic book business being a business at the expense of their creativity... so I give my thoughts and opinions on it and what could allow for some experimentation with good business minded practices.

Regis Philbin

Just after doing a watch-along of the 1989 film 'Major League' via my discord channel, I saw the news that Regis Philbin passed away at the age of 88. Without question Regis was an icon and staple of television for decades, and his legacy cannot be denied (no matter how hard Kelly Ripa tries). Most of what I've seen of Regis was most from watching the "Live With Regis and Kathie Lee..." back in the 90s during Summer vacations and days off from school.I don't remember any specific segments, but it was something to watch during mid-mornings on weekdays.

Of course some know I'm a wrestling fan, and so I want to really slam the WWE for the fact that they did not induct him into their Hall of Fame as a celebrity, when he had such a big impact. "Live with Regis and Kathie Lee" was a major show the WWE sent their talent to on a regular basis, and he was a big part of WrestleMania VII performing in some backstage skits and also providing commentary during the main event. Regis's ties with pro-wrestling goes back to early in his career when he had Freddie Blassie on as a guest back in the 1960s.

So that mini rant aside, deep condolences to Regis' friends and family.

Kirby and Terry Are My Smash Mains?

So among the games I picked up for my Nintendo Switch was Super Mash Bros. Ultimate, because I was always fascinated by the game and after playing Brawhalla in 2019 for a bit, I put it at the top of my list of Switch games to get. And I've basically been playing it off an on, going through classic mode to unlock characters, and a couple of weeks ago I did stream it a bit on a night where I also played Mario Kart 8 to get a feel for the 'Spirits Mode'.

Now I think most people new to Smash end up starting with like Mario... but for me, it seemed right to go with Kirby as the first character I used the most. Not only because Kirby basically is the one character who survives in the big opening segment of the Spirits adventure mode, but when you consider that Kirby's creator Masahiro Sakurai is also the dude who created Smash Brothers, and who for all intent and purposes puts his health on the line developing the game, it made the most sense to use Kirby as my go to for nearly everything. Sure other characters I've gotten a better instant knack for using like Daisy and Zelda, but Kirby seemed like the best the use. The fact he can nearly get back to the platforms when being smashed away with how many float-jumps he can do certainly helped. I also had some familiarity with Kirby's abilities because I have played Kirby's Dreamland a little, so is inhale and copy ability made it an almost much do in every match I've played thus far. In the few online matches I've done, I've basically held my own with Kirby... and when I lost matches for when 'challengers appeared' when clearing Classic Mode, Kirby was my go to in the rematches

But as of a couple of days ago, I've started using Terry from the Fatal Fury series. Now I've never devoted much time to Fatal Fury or its related games, but since Terry was a DLC character I kind of had him available from the start. Figuring out what works with him is a little different than with Kirby because Terry is a fighting game character, so thinking of combos based on what's avaliable is at the forefront of my mind. Anyone that's seen me play Power Rangers Battle for the Grid, Mortal Kombat X, Injustice 2, or various Street Fighter games knows I love to figure out a basic set of combinations for a character. But Smash's controls and inputs are far different than any normal fighting game, so Terry's been a little puzzle. I have figured out out that his up-special certainly can clear folks out if I can hit it two times in a row at just the right angle, and his down special when in the air is a great way to get out of being surrounded because he comes down in an angle. Also noticed his charged attack (kind of like a bit roundhouse kick type thing) really does wonders in smacking folks off screen.

Probably not that most technical ways of describing these things and this probably would've worked better with video, but I didn't feel like recording anything at the time I was writing this.

Set The Cost of Next Gen Games at $70... We'll Just Wait For Sales

So not to long ago, the profit over quality publisher known as 2K announced that that Next-Gen (PS5/Xbox X-Series) version of NBA 2K21 is going to have the default price of $70... and quite frankly, a lot of people weren't too thrilled about that with the fact that at the time of this writing COVID-19 is spiking like mad throughout the United States, thanks to people feeling entitled and not doing the right thing (social distancing, wearing masks) combined with all the mass protests regarding issues of equality.

But the thing is I'm not too mad about 2K announcing they want to charge more for the next generation of games... and to be fair, the last time a price standard was set was 15 years ago at the start of the Xbox 360/PS3 era where things got set at $59.99 and I'll tell you why.

We're already paying more way more than $70 for games at launch. Between the base game often priced at $59.99 and more often than not a season pass at $29.99, we're already at $90 before games are even released. So we've basically been getting priced gouged for years. But that's alright, I got the solution

Just wait for sales.

One things I've very much noticed since stepping back into console gaming is when it comes to things on the Xbox One side, sales happen every week. Hell I probably could've bought the games I loaded up my digital account with three times over with how often they are on sale, and these are including games released in the past 10 months. Not to mention a lot of the DLC and Season Passes for games also have gone on sale, and so say for example for a major title like say Dragon Ball FighterZ, instead of paying over a $100 for the game, the season pass and any DLC not included in said pass.... I just waited for it all to be on sale, and got it all for less than $70. I know I know, people want to be the first to get the achievements and trophies for games when they are brand new, but you know what, if its easier on your wallet to wait, then that's the best way to go. Any games that come out at launch for the PS5 and Xbox X-Series consoles will be on sale within 60 months. Hell NBA 2K20 is on sale nearly every other week it seems.

Also to remember there's also the the factor of 'Ultimate Editions' of games that end up being released with all the DLC included, now this doesn't happen with Sports Games often, but for every other genre, it makes sense, it's another example of getting everything for less than what the original sales price was for everything. If you think anyone is buying say the Batman Arkham Series at full price with all the related DLC separately these days, you're out of your mind. You can just sit back and wait to add the game to your collection.

So yeah, 2K, EA, Square Enix, Capcom... raise the prices for new release to $70... we the consumer will just wait for things to go on sale. I'm sure someone at IGN or something will argue that hurts the people who actually work on the games... but it's not like those folks who do work on the games will actually see any of that money.

Of course that's just my opinion.

34 Minutes Mayhem: Inch By Inch To Victory

During the July 7, 2020 edition of Sunday Night Overwatch over on my twitch channel (http://twitch.tv/fredcasden), I along with Kalenal got into a Mayhem match that lasted well over half an hour. Since the match was us on 'Attack', basically pushing a payload across the map of Havana, the team on 'Defense' had the natural advantage... this video not only shows everything, the focus and intensity that was involved... along with the fact that Kal somehow broke time and space, when as Wrecking Ball she racked up 45 minutes of Objective time... again the match lasted only 34 minutes, and the video itself is unedited, shows the prematch and post match stuff.
